Due to the changing climate conditions, more and more wine-growing companies can be found in North-West Europe. But starting a vineyard is not something you just do. There is a lot to do before you can pick tasty, juicy grapes. To protect the grapes against weather conditions, wasps, insects and birds, Howitec has various nets and meshes.
Drosophilla suzukii
The Drosophila suzukii, also called the suzuki fruit fly, is one of the most feared pests for grape cultivation. The Drosophila suzukii lays the eggs just below the skin in ripening and undamaged fruit. The larva then feeds on the pulp, causing the fruits to rot. We have Ornata Air Plus 88102 with Velcro especially for grapes. This insect net with a mesh size of 0.88x1.02 mm has a width of 1.25 m. The mesh can easily be stretched along the bunches of grapes and fastened at the top and bottom by the strong Velcro.
Wasps
Wasps are most of the time very useful in the vineyard because they eat the cadavers of insects. But in August and September they mainly target the grapes themselves. To prevent this, we have the Vinea Wasps Protection Net. This blue net is made of a flexible tape/strap material and is stretched along the bunches of grapes. It protects the grapes from wasps, birds but also from hail. Vinea is available in two widths, 0.9 and 1.2 meters.
Insects, birds and the weather
We have the Botra Fruit Bag to protect the grapes optimally. The Botra Xtra is 20x30 cm and is made of a fresh green woven polyester. In addition, this cover is provided with a woven closing cord and is therefore very easy to attach. The material is breathable and the green color provides a natural look. These fruit covers can be used several times and are therefore a durable solution.
